e-Journal

Journal Purpose Statement:

GENERATIVITY: Advances Social Work Leadership in Aging is a bi-annual online, national, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the publication of the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) student and alumni research.

The purpose of the journal is two-fold: 1) to foster and reward scholarly efforts of HPPAE graduates as well as to provide a valuable learning experience, and to 2) create a vehicle to contribute knowledge for advancing social work leadership in aging.

As the older adult population continues to swell, there is an overwhelming shortage and increasing demand for skilled professionals to address the diversity of needs of seniors. HPPAE trained social workers are aging-competent, have the skills necessary to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and work across disciplines as the thought- and change- leaders in the burgeoning field of aging. The opportunity for HPPAE alumni and students to publish in a national journal is not only a contribution to the profession, but adds value to individual self-discovery and leadership development.

The papers and posters published in this journal will reflect appropriate scope and complexity of excellent work in the field. The basis for accepting papers and posters for publication is the agreement among three peer reviewers that the submission directly addresses issues relevant to and makes explicit links between aging, social work, and leadership.

Submission Deadlines:
Submissions for review must be emailed to Jarmin Yeh, Program Strategy Associate at jyeh@nyam.org.

Submission due date is April 1st, for consideration in the Spring issue. Submission due date is December 1st, for consideration in the Winter issue.

Instructions for Authors:
GENERATIVITY encourages HPPAE students and alumni to submit papers or posters for consideration.

Papers or posters may represent a range of research (such as qualitative or quantitative research, surveys, case studies, literature reviews, meta-analysis, policy analysis, etc.). There are no restrictions on research themes as long as they are linked to aging and social work.

  1. The primary author of a submission must be a HPPAE student or alumni. Additional authors do not need to be HPPAE scholars. (For alumni, current work or work completed as a graduate student is acceptable.)
  2. Only original papers (not published or accepted for publication elsewhere) will be accepted. (Oral presentations on a paper or poster presentations at professional conferences do not count as published papers).
    1. Papers may be a maximum of 3500 words. (Word document only)
    2. Posters must be one image (Word document, .ppt or .jpg image). (For help, go to: Poster_Creation_Tutorial).
  3. All papers and posters must be prepared according to the American Psychological Association guidelines, www.apastyle.org.

What to submit (via email only):

  • Email subject: "JOURNAL SUBMISSION"
  • Cover letter, e-mail attachment:
    • Name
    • Additional author(s) names
    • Mailing address
    • Telephone
    • Email address

    • Brief biography (2-3 sentences)
    • Short abstract (200 words)
    • Keywords (3-5 words)
    • If human subjects are used, a statement must be included to indicate institutional Internal Review Board (IRB) approval of research.
  • One electronic copy of paper or poster as an e-mail attachment. The following formats are acceptable: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, PowerPoint or .jpeg graphic (for posters). Do not send PDF documents.

Criteria for Acceptance:
In general, three peer reviewers will read every submission and rate each one based on the following factors:

  1. Criteria
    • Contribution to social work leadership in aging knowledge
    • Utility and relevance to social work leadership in aging practice
    • Originality
    • Accuracy
    • Currency & Interest
    • Appropriateness for the journal
  2. Writing/Presentation style
    • Readability and clarity for presentation
    • Logical organization
    • Appropriate documentation (APA format)
    • For papers - 3500 words or less
    • For posters - 1 image document that is visually balanced

Review process:
Three peer-reviewers from the Committee on Leadership in Aging will make a final decision on whether a paper or poster will be included in the journal based on the reviewer's ratings of the criteria above. All reviews are blind.

Decisions
The decision process will take a minimum of 1 month. Authors should be aware that reviewers volunteer their time and that the process may be slower during certain times of the year. The decision on a paper or poster will only be released via email. The decision will be one of the following:

  • Accept for publication. If a paper or poster is accepted for publication, the author will receive an emailed letter of acceptance and the paper or poster will appear in the next issue of the electronic journal.
  • Revise and resubmit for next issue. The Reviewers may be interested in accepting a paper or poster if changes are made. In this case, the author will receive comments from the reviewers specifying the changes to be made. The decision indicates strong interest in accepting the submitted manuscript for the following issue of the journal but does not assure final acceptance.
    • When the author resubmits a paper or poster, s/he should indicate on their cover letter that the submission is "Revised for resubmission", and include the date of the original submission.
  • Insufficient for acceptance. The Reviewers may make the decision to deny a paper or poster for publication. Reviewers' comments to the author will be sent with the decision letter.
