This series of educational materials is designed to augment the skills of social work students and practitioners, as well as practitioners in related disciplines, to work with diverse populations of older adults and their families. Enhancing traditional methods of case-based learning, each of the four Windows-based CD-ROMS includes social work interviews with one or more clients, key concepts, a discussion guide and a transcription of the interview, plus references to supplementary education and resource materials.
Topics include core areas of practice with older adults:
- Coping with Chronic Illness
- Sexuality in Aging

The CDs come with accompanying instruction materials, and are designed to be used in continuing education programs and in educating other practitioners.
Each CD:
- Addresses one critical issue in aging
- Shows one or more expert social workers interviewing older adults and families
- Focuses on specific topics related to aging
Accompanying teaching materials include:
- References
- Web resources
- Class discussion topics
- Sample assignments
- Instructor's guide

Online Training Course
The free-of-charge on-line continuing education course administered by NASW is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation through an unrestricted grant to The New York Academy of Medicine's Social Work Leadership Institute and focuses on competency-based social work practice when working with older adults. The course caters to field instructors, students, and NASW members in general practice.
The curriculum is designed by NASW and the New York Academy of Medicine staff, with experts in the field of social work and aging advising on content. The course is formatted similarly to NASW's existing on-line courses, "Understanding Cancer: The Social Worker's Role" and "Understanding End of Life Care: The Social Worker's Role," both of which have been quite successful.
It will allow social workers a chance to earn 2.0 continuing education units at their convenience. The content will include: the basics of aging and the population affected; common considerations and experiences in the aging continuum; social work competencies and practice information; and national resources.
For more information regarding the on-line course "Understanding Aging: The Social Worker's Role" visit the online course website by clicking here.
